Conference Participants Go to the State Capitol

    California members from across the state gathered in Sacramento on April 23-25 to attend the annual California Society for Human Resource Management (CalSHRM) 2014 California State Legislative and HR Conference. Setting new attendance records, attendees were actively seeking guidance on complying with the multitude of federal, state and local laws impacting the workplace, and seeking updates on legislative developments in Sacramento and Washington, D.C.

    The most engaged of these event attendees volunteered their time and lobbying efforts as part of the conference’s Hill Day on April 24. Nearly 60 HR professionals from across California conducted in-person meetings at the state Capitol in Sacramento with their respective state lawmakers and/or staffs to discuss several issues that matter to the profession, including the need to improve workplace flexibility and the dangers of mandating a burdensome paid-sick-leave requirement on all California employers.

    Because some HR professionals around the state were not able to attend the conference or visit the state Capitol in person last week, SHRM provided them a platform through which to advocate on these issues from their desk via a Virtual Hill Day. Through SHRM’s user-friendly online system, California HR professionals were able to easily e-mail their state legislators on key workplace issues and were encouraged to interact with elected officials through Twitter’s social media platform.
